Thyme in general is a safe plant in the recommended doses. An overdose of thyme may cause:
– Alterations of the digestive system: vomiting, light abdominal pain.
– Intoxication: hypothermia (decrease in body temperature) and bradycardia (decrease in heart rate).
– Hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. Because of its thymol content, an excess of thyme can cause hyperfunction of the thyroid gland.
– Contact dermatitis in people with hypersensitivity.
Thyme essential oil is much more potent than the plant and should not be eaten. Several side effects have been described in the use of the essential oil:
– Nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, seizures, dyspnoea (difficulty breathing) and heart problems.
Can thyme be taken during pregnancy?
Thyme as a plant should NOT be used during pregnancy without first consulting a physician.
Your essential oil is CONTRAINDICATED during pregnancy and breastfeeding because it can cause miscarriage.
What is the dosage of thyme
– Infusion. One teaspoon of thyme (2g) in a cup of boiling water 3 times a day.
Essential oil of thyme should only be used topically, never internal: do not ingest.
