Medicinal properties of strawberry tree

Natural remedies with strawberry tree

Does strawberry tree contain alcohol and make you drunk?

The belief that strawberry trees make you drunk is due to the fact that, when the fruits ripen, the sugars ferment and may contain small doses of alcohol (up to 2%).

For this reason, high intakes of strawberry trees can produce symptoms of alcohol poisoning (“getting drunk” effect), but probably only in children, who are more vulnerable to small amounts of alcohol.

The strawberry tree is a good remedy for treating urinary tract ailments due to its properties against urinary tract infections.

It is mainly used in cases of infections caused by bacteria. However, for this to be possible, it is necessary that our urine be as non-acidic as possible, which is why treatments carried out using this plant are usually combined with a diet rich in alkaline foods.

It is therefore suitable for the treatment of diseases such as urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder), irritation of the urinary tract and acts on the urgent need to urinate repeatedly that these urinary conditions generate (urinary incontinence).

These effects must be attributed to arbutin, which is transformed into hydroquinone when it comes into contact with the intestinal flora, in addition to its high tannin content, which acts on the pus secretions that cause these diseases.

Arbutin is candidacidal and is recommended in cases of candidiasis or vaginal infections.

Antioxidant properties of the strawberry tree

The strawberry tree fruits are very antioxidant due to their richness in antioxidants such as vitamin C and anthocyanins. Vitamin C helps to combat excess free radicals, for example those produced by tobacco consumption.

Anthocyanins, in addition to their anti-aging properties, appear to have antiviral properties, helping to combat colds, infections, allergies and flu. They also play a prominent role in urinary tract infections, as they have bactericidal properties that help treat cystitis.

These components protect the heart from cardiovascular diseases and, together with a heart-healthy diet, are of great interest in preventing and treating cholesterol, hypertension and arteriosclerosis.

The leaves are rich in gluconic acid, which has hepatotonic and cholesterol-lowering properties.

Antibiotic: All parts of the plant are rich in ethyl gallate, an antibiotic component. It is a suitable food for winter, because it helps fight infections, flu and colds. Due to its glycoside content, it has applications as a kidney antiseptic.

  • Diuretic: The fruits are diuretic and contain malic acid. They are suitable when it is necessary to increase urine production and promote the elimination of body fluids. They are recommended in cases of obesity, rheumatic diseases, conditions such as uric acid, gout, and the treatment of kidney diseases.
  • Tonsils: Like many other astringent plants, gargles made from the leaves can be made to treat sore throat and irritation.
  • Diarrhea: It is a very astringent plant due to its high tannin content, especially in the leaves and bark. Tannins have the ability to stop very persistent diarrhea. These properties are present in the leaves and fruits.

Does strawberry tree upset the stomach?

As described in ancient texts, the fruits can be indigestible due to their high tannin content.

The high tannin content can cause stomach irritation in people with sensitive stomachs or gastritis.

It has been proven that tannins can increase heartburn, so their use is not appropriate for people who already have this anomaly.
