What is Roman chamomile and what is it for?
Roman chamomile or chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a medicinal plant indicated for people with a nervous temperament or with pain problems. It also has antiseptic properties and, when used externally, is used in remedies to heal wounds.
Side effects of chamomile or Roman chamomile
Dermatitis and sensitivity: The fresh plant can cause contact dermatitis. The essential oil is sensitizing and can be irritating to the skin.
- Allergy: People who are allergic to chamomile may experience adverse effects when taking infusions with the plant, such as dizziness, vomiting, restlessness, conjunctivitis, stomach pain, diarrhea, and augesia.
- Vomiting: In high doses it is an emetic plant.
Roman chamomile for pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
Pregnant women and children under 5 years of age should not take the essential oil of the plant.
However, infusions are not contraindicated and can be taken safely, although in moderate doses since if taken very regularly or in very strong infusions, it can cause vomiting. The infusion is also safe during breastfeeding.
