Scientific noun: Cistus ladanifer L.

cistusFamily: Rockrose family – cistaceae.

Habitat: In dry woods, bushes and arid lands in the Mediterranean zone.

Toxic constituents:

  • Essence, exuded by the plant during hot seasons, thorough the hairs of young stems and leaves. It is essentially made by: labdandiol (C17H30O), borneol, cineole, geraniol esters, sesquiterpenes and tannins

Uses of Crimson Spot Rockrose

  • Medicinal: Local analgesic for the treatment of rheumatic and intestinal pains, ulcers, stomach acidity, nervousness. (Because of its toxicity, it should not be used to attain these goals.)
  • Industrial: Perfume industry cultivates this plant, mainly in the North of Spain and Portugal, to extract the labdanum, a gome- resin, which after being refined, is used to fix and aromatize.
