Is sweet potato good for diabetes?
Although, apparently, a food may seem inappropriate for diabetes because of its sweet taste, the fact is that sweet potato is a beneficial food in type II diabetes, as demonstrated by scientific studies.
What sweet potato components are suitable for diabetes?
Nutritionally, sweet potato is rich in carbohydrates, so it must be consumed in balanced rations (100g. of sweet potato equals 24g of carbohydrates). However, this tuber also contains pectin fiber, which reduces the absorption of sugar contained in the food, as well as vitamins, minerals and nutrients beneficial in diabetic disease.
Sweet potato possesses at least 10 components for diabetes. Among them, we should highlight The following:
- Arginine
- Minerals: copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc
- Vitamins: niacin, tocopherol
- Flavonoids: quercetin
These components act by improving circulation and cardiovascular system (arginine, tocopherol, quercetin), and because of its hypoglycemic effect.
In one study, the effects of white-fleshed sweet potato in diabetic animals fed this plant for 8 weeks were evaluated. The results showed an improvement in pancreatic cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels.
