Eggs for babies and infants
Can babies eat eggs?
Babies can eat eggs, but we must take into account when and how to introduce this food.
When babies can start eating eggs?
The introduction of eggs should NOT be done before a baby is 9 months and a half old.
How to enter egg consumption in infants?
Babies should not eat whole eggs at first. They should start with the gradual ingestion of a medium cooked egg yolk (half of a boiled egg without the egg white). Adults should assess how a baby tolerates it, since eggs can cause allergies.
In the same way than when we introduce a new food never tested, we must be careful and always do it during the day and never at night. So, if not tolerated, we can observe it more easily and quickly.
How many eggs can a baby eat a week?
Once properly tolerated, we can give our baby a whole egg yolk twice a week and from the third week on, the introduction must be combined with other protein sources admitted.
Eggs can be added, for example, to a vegetable puree that has to be properly pureed or mashed or even with a slurry of crushed cereal and milk.
Is egg white adequate for babies?
Egg whites must not be entered in baby’s nutrition before 12 months of age because it is the part of an egg that can generate allergy and also because a baby’s metabolism and immunity is not fully developed yet.
Therefore, eggs may not be well digested and they may be responsible for a food poisoning.
