What to eat when there is an attack of gout or very high uric acid?
Diet for gout attack, uric acid, or hyperuricemia
What should a diet be like for a gout attack or uric acid crisis?
A proper diet for gout attack is one that helps reduce uric acid levels. It does so through diuretic foods that cause an increase in diuresis and the elimination of uric acid.
In addition, the purine content of the diet should be reduced to avoid external sources of uric acid. Purines are components found in food, whose transformation in the body increases uric acid levels.
Mainly, the foods richest in purines are meats, seafood, fish, organ meats and products made from these foods: sausages, broths, pâté, etc.
Diet and gout or uric acid crisis
In case of a gout or uric acid crisis, the doctor is the one who should recommend what type of treatment to use. Ibuprofen-type anti-inflammatories and a drug called colchicine are usually given. At the same time, it is recommended to follow a strict diet without uric acid, that is, to consume only those foods whose purine content is very low.
Meat, fish and seafood are not recommended. Purine-free foods of animal origin are dairy and eggs. For this reason, one of the most recommended types of diet in high uric acid crisis is the vegetarian or ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet. (In case of obesity or cholesterol, use milk and skimmed yogurt, low-fat cheese and up to 3 eggs a week).
Vegetables, greens, tubers, fruits, cereals and nuts do not contain uric acid.
It is recommended not to consume mushrooms, asparagus and spinach in case of gout attack. They are the vegetables with the most purines, although their content is still low.
Along with the diet, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day, which can be combined with diuretic infusions (horsetail, dandelion or rosemary). It is recommended between 2 and 3 liters of liquid per day.
To promote the elimination of fluid and uric acid, you should avoid eating foods with a lot of salt such as pickles, sausages, salted cod, snacks, chips, precooked, soy sauce, etc.
Eliminate alcohol because it prevents the elimination of uric acid.
