BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET FOR ALZHEIMER
Numerous scientific studies have shown the properties of the Mediterranean diet as a protective factor for dementia and degenerative diseases.
Mediterranean diet and Alzheimer
The Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
To evaluate its effectiveness, we cite the study that was published in the Archives of Neurology:
The research was applied on a total of 2,258 not insane people in New York, who were evaluated every year and a half, both in nutrition and in other specific markers.
The results showed that people that came closer to the nutrition model of the Mediterranean diet had a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.
These effects are due to the quality of dietary fat and antioxidant anti-inflammatory effect and all of its components, both olive oil as plant-abundance.
Improved cognitive performance
The contribution of polyphenols which a Mediterranean diet boasts because of its richness in vegetables and olive oil helps improve cognitive abilities and memory.
Among foods rich in polyphenols we find fruits, vegetables, olive oil and spices.
In particular, the phenolic compounds of extra virgin olive oil has shown beneficial health effects in vitro, in vivo and clinically. These provide antioxidant effects, being anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-microbial.
In the case of neurodegenerative diseases, these phenols have shown neuroprotective effects against stroke, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, senile dementia and peripheral neuropathy.
