Main eucalyptus diseases and pests
Eucalyptus diseases
Among the major diseases affecting the eucalyptus we can consider:
- Fungi and bacteria that attack the roots: the most important among them are produced by the genus Phytophthora that causes root rot and death of trees.
- Stem blight: caused by the fungus Diaporthe cubensis Bruner that causes a lack of development of this tree, leading to its death.
- Pink disease: Produced by Corticium salmonicolor, a pathogen that causes the destruction of many branches and plant parts. It begins with the appearance of pink spots and the subsequent introduction of the fungus within the timber which causes the death of the affected area.
- Eucalyptus rust: caused by fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum that attacks the leaves causing them to deform and fall.
Eucalyptus pests
Among the major pests we have:
- Eucalyptus longhorned borer: Caused by Phoracantha semipunctata, whose larvae attack the wood of mature trees or their roots causing a lot of damage.
- Blue gum psyllid: Ctenarytaina eucalypti Mask that feeds on the sap of this tree.
- Stalk borers, termites and ants: These are the main insects that attack wood from trees cut or diseased in the warm regions.
- Damage caused to young species: the damage is caused by caterpillars of moths, ants and beetle larvae that eat the tender parts.
- Eucalyptus gummosis: it is a gummy exudation that occurs as a result of damage caused by different factors such as the attack of insects, fungi, or breaking branches.
